Facebook overtakes Yahoo as 2nd largest Web property

February 18th, 2010

Facebook has zipped past Yahoo to claim the number two spot among the most visited Web sites in the U.S., now trailing only Google, according to data from Compete, a Web analytics firm.

It says Facebook drew 134 million visitors in January, with Yahoo at 132 million and Google leading the pack with 148 million.

More importantly, though, says a Compete’s Aaron Prebluda, “The real story is engagement, especially in the ongoing battle for those coveted big brand dollars. On this front, Facebook is second to none.”

Compete’s data shows Facebook dominated in that category, claiming 11.6 percent of all time spent online in January, while Google and Yahoo saw declines and came in at 4.25 percent for Yahoo and 4.1 percent for Google.

It should be noted that Reston, VA-based comScore, which uses a slightly different methodology than Compete, still ranks Facebook fourth in number of visitors behind Google, Yahoo, and Microsoft.
