SAN FRANCISCO – Twitter Inc.’s micro-blogging service signed up more than 5 million new users in March for 9.3 million, according to Reston, VA-based comScore.
The report suggests that Twitter’s increasingly high profile in the media accounts for the rise in sign-ups. It notes that there is a large overlap of audiences for major news outlets and the micro-blogging service.
According to comScore, the average Twitter user is more than two or three times as likely to visit top news outlets as the average person.
Several Southeastern companies such as Atlanta-based Rentwiki and Twitpay and the recently formed TweetMYJobs.com in Charlotte, NC, are finding business uses for the service.
