AeA study: tech job growth slows

October 17th, 2008

WASHINGTON, DC – Although the technology industry added 78,300 jobs during 2008′s first seven months, the rise trails the 11,400 jobs added in the same period a year ago.

Christopher Hansen, president and CEO of the AeA, which conducts the study, noted that “This is the fourth straight year the U.S. tech industry is adding jobs, but the pace is slowing.

“Given the economic downturn and current disruption in the financial markets, future job growth will be – at best – uncertain.”

Tech job growth lagged that of the 2 percent growthin the U.S. private sector.

Tech manufacturers shed 2,500 jobs in the U.S. from January to July, a 0.2 percent decrease to 1.28 million jobs.

Tech services employment rose, adding 80,800 net jobs in the period.

Software services saw a 2.6 percent increase of 42,300 jobs, while communications services saw a .9 percent decrease, dropping 11,500 jobs.
