WINSTON SALEM, NC – According to an article in the Wall Street Journal, Dell Inc is planning to sell off its global computer manufacturing facilities in favor of a more contract manufacturing approach.
Dell opened a plant in Winston Salem, North Carolina in 2005, thanks in part to $300 million in state and local incentives. The facility currently employs around 1100 people.
The Journal noted that selling some of these plants off, such as the one in North Carolina, could prove difficult due to the long term requirements of the incentives lured to attract Dell. North Carolina, for example, required that Dell create 1,500 jobs by 2010 to qualify for the full incentive deal.
Dell had no comment for the article.
