Linthicum, Md.—Ciena, a company making network equipment, is buying Washington state-based World Wide Packets, which sells a technology for deploying Ethernet efficiently, for $290 million in cash and stock.
Ciena will pay $200 million in cash, the rest in stock.
Gary Smith, president and CEO of Ciena said the acquisition strengthens the company’s position in the emerging wireless backhaul space and in the Ethernet services markets.
