GREENSBORO, NC—Google plans to put its color maps on small gas pump screens with an Internet connection with the help of Greensboro, NC-based Gilbarco Veeder-Root, which makes the pumps.
Google says it will start dispensing driving directions at thousands of pumps throughout the country starting early next month.
Lost drivers will be able to scroll through options to find hotels, landmarks, restaurants and hospitals selected by the station’s owner.
The pumps will print directions to a selected destination. Eventually, Gibarco plans to enable typing in a search request for specific addresses.
The service is initially slated for about 3,500 gas pumps.
Google says the service will not include its ads, but retailers can sell coupons.
