Atlanta, GA—Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue and Atlanta
Mayor Shirley Franklin announced plans to create a scientific research park at Fort McPherson, Tuesday.
The state requested 115 acres of the 488-acre military facility to host the research park site. Fort McPherson was founded in 1889 and is headquarters to the U.S. Army Reserve Command, U.S. Army Forces Command, and Third U.S. Army.
“It would create a world-class research park to advance and draw upon the strength of Georgia’s research institutions and its private partners in research and development,” said Perdue.
The Army leaves the base in 2011, and must approve the redevelopment plans prior to leaving. If plans are approved, then redevelopment can be implemented as early as Sept. 15, 2011.
