North Carolina ranks 26th in State Competitveness Report

December 21st, 2006

BOSTON, MA – According to Beacon Hill Institute’s sixth-annual “State Competitiveness Report,” North Carolina is in the middle of the road compared to the other 49 U.S. states in terms of economic competitiveness. Boston-based Beacon Hill, a think tank and research center that analyzes and disseminates public policy issues, ranked North Carolina 26th overall.

The 2006 report ranks the states according to 42 variables in eight categories: government and fiscal policy, security, infrastructure, human resources, technology, business incubation, openness, and environmental policy. While North Carolina scored high marks in business incubation and infrastructure—9 and 16, respectively—it scored 35th in environmental policy and 40th in security.

At tenth place overall, Virginia was the only Southeastern state to rank higher than North Carolina. Massachusetts was number 1 and Mississippi was fiftieth over all.
