Virginia’s Governor wants to foster teleworking

September 13th, 2006

ROANOKE, VA – Virginia’s Governor, Tim Kaine, has created by executive order an office to foster teleworking in the private sector and state government.

Kaine signed the order for the Office of Telework Promotion and Broadband Assistance at the Commonwealth of Virginia’s Innovative Technology Symposium (COVITS).

He stated that the Office of Telework and Promotion will “keep the usage of this technology a point of focus for all state offices.”

Kaine, who would like to see 20% of state workers telecommuting by 2010, wants offices to do more than promote telework; he wants them to offer it as an option to employees.

As of now, about 3% of the state workforce commutes, but according to Kaine, the advances in broadband communications make it possible for people to take advantage of employment opportunities in Northern Virginia and other areas no matter where they live.
