Southeastern states continue climb in biotech rankings

April 21st, 2006

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – Southeastern states continue to climb in major biotech rankings. The most recent evidence is provided by Ernst & Young’s Beyond Borders: The Global Biotechnology Report 2006, which reveals that three Southeastern states – North Carolina, Georgia and Florida – are among the top ten U.S. biotech centers.

The report was released at the BIO 2006 conference in Chicago last week. North Carolina held its third place ranking behind California and Massachusetts from 2004. Georgia improved its ranking from 2004, climbing from number 8 to number 7, while Florida entered the top ten list for the first time at number 10.

Other evidence from the report that establishes the continued growth of the biotech industry in the region:

Total revenues for the Southeast’s 30 public companies in 2005 were $1.9 billion
Market capitalization for these companies was $8.9 billion
Public biotech companies in the Southeast invested $659 million in R&D, a 20 percent increase over 2004.

“Our region continues to be a dynamic place to create, build and locate biotechnology companies,” said Mike Constantino, Ernst & Young, Southeast Area Life Science Practice Leader, and SEBIO Board member. “The area is loaded with great universities spinning out exciting new technologies and has a business climate that contains many public/private partnerships. Venture capital continues to expand and State governments are very supportive. I believe this region will continue to increase in importance with respect to biotechnology, and life sciences companies in general.”
