Computer Break-Ins Persist In RTP

April 13th, 2005

DURHAM AND RESEARCH TRIANGLE PARK — According to several sources, including a report on WRAL, office break-ins where computers are the target of thieves are still occurring at an alarming rate.

One Durham County Sheriff’s Deputy told the Triangle TechJournal in early April that there have been several break-ins along businesses on Highway 54 and in the Research Triangle Park district. The deputy said that in those break-ins, most of the targeted offices were not equipped with burglar alarms. Computers and computer equipment have been the primary targets.

WRAL just reported that the Durham Police believe that the same suspect is responsible for over 50 such break-ins in the Triangle area. One company, Arcadis which is an environmental firm in Research Triangle Park, has been broken into twice, says the report.

Police now have a photograph of who they believe is the suspect, caught on tape on a security camera. The picture and more details from the report are available at WRAL.com.
